"I would like to thank you once more for making your visit such a huge success with our students...You are truly an amazing writer who possesses a unique ability to touch people of all ages!"
- Dianne Hoffman, Past President, State of Maryland International Reading Association Council (SoMIRAC)
I would love to visit your school and talk about the writing life! Please e-mail me at wendy(dot)shang(at)hotmail.com for more information. Here are some examples of talks I give - I'm happy to tailor them to fit your needs and goals.
I am committed to the idea that all children should have an opportunity to meet an author. If you are a Title I school in northern Virginia, let's talk! Or, in the greater DC metro area, contact An Open Book Foundation to see how you can have an author come to your school!
The Editing and Publishing Process
Wendy will take students through the many steps from original draft to published book, including: character development, "big idea" edits, sentence
and paragraph-level improvements, copyediting, and advanced reader copies. Students will come away with the message that writers improve by becoming better re-writers.
Sources of Inspiration
What parts of Wendy's books are true or inspired by real life, and what parts are complete fiction? Wendy will talk how to find inspiration, reveal the family stories that spurred my work, and discuss how history can intersect in unexpected ways with our family histories. She will also show students how having a specific, defined inspiration can help writers develop more material and ideas.
Your presentation was the best ever - encouraging, inspiring to the children and specific about how they need to think about writing and editing.
It was truly a memorable day at Haycock.
