My dog Charlie likes to help. He takes me for walks when I get stuck!
Haribo gummi bears are my favorite special treat!
Like many writers, I loved to write as a kid. I wrote my first book when I was about five - it was called The Big Fight and it was about a bunny and a sheep arguing over who was the fluffiest. Like many writers, I went on to law school. (Well, not right after being five. A little later than that.)
I have spent most of my adult life connected to kids in one way or another. In addition to being a mom (best job!), I have been an attorney on juvenile justice issues, a tutor at an elementary school and a juvenile facility, and a Court-Appointed Special Advocate. Right now, I am a Ready 2 Read volunteer with my local public library, bringing library programs to preschools.
I write middle-grade because I love the books from that genre and I have powerful memories from that time - best friends, small adventures, new discoveries (mostly about human nature), the particular cruelty that kids can inflict and incredible kindnesses as well. A few favorite books from childhood? Little House on the Prairie, anything by Judy Blume, Harriet the Spy and From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.
I am represented by Tracey Adams of Adams Literary. If you would like to interview me, please contact my publicist, Saraciea Fennell: sfennell (at) scholastic (dot) com.
